Highways ministry aims to e-collect 50% toll charges
NEW DELHI: The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has set a target to collect 50% of total daily toll charges through FASTag and other electronic means.
The government gets about Rs 51 crore as toll on an average per day on national highways. Currently, only 20% of this is collected through RFID (radio frequency identification) card or FASTag, which enables automatic deduction of toll charges.
Starting April, all toll lanes across the country will be hybrid, allowing users with RFID FASTag to zoom past toll plazas without stopping.
“In a bid to reduce congestion at toll gates on national highways, we're working on getting all freight vehicles on the RFID platform,” a top ministry official said.
